February MyGlam Bag (Or: Why I Quit Birchbox)

In The Bag:
NYX Roll On Shimmer in Chestnut
X Out Shine Control (by Proactiv)*
Freeman Mask*
Premier Dead Sea Sample Packets (x2)*
Mini Ghirardelli Chocolates (x2)
NuMe $100 "Gift Card"*
*Comment below if you want my NuMe code, or if you are interested in trading for the other 3 items :)

Decided to dress up the photos with some flowers from my yard :) the cherry trees are in full bloom, so everything is carpeted in pink and white petals; definitely feels like summer, even though it's still technically winter! Aanyway, my first "glam" bag just arrived. It was technically supposed to ship out between the 9-14th, but I just received it a few days ago (and I live less than half an hour away).

Considering the quality of the past two bags (especially their first bag!) I'm a little disappointed with this one. Many subscribers felt that they did a "bait and switch" with the first bag, but I remain optimistic :).

My biggest complaint is that this bag mostly consists of skincare items with harsh chemicals not suitable for dry, sensitive skin--I mean, a Proactiv product? I'm guessing half their subscribers don't have oily or acne-prone skin. Out of the entire bag, I was able to try one product, and eat some chocolate. But I was pleased with what I did try!

NYX Roll-On Shimmer

$: 4.50 at (use code GLAMMENYX for 30% off)
Size: .05 oz (one size)
At a Glance: This is a very shimmery, well-pigmented loose powder with a roll-on top. I was worried this would be a hot glittery mess, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it. I had originally hoped for a highlight color, but I'm glad I received Chestnut instead.
Impression: The color is gorgeous: a dusty brown coated in a fine bronze-y shimmer--and this really is a shimmer not a chunky glitter, so it's very wearable.  The only drawback is that it wipes off in a heartbeat. If you wear a great primer and don't touch your eyes, this shouldn't be that much of a problem.

The powder is very loose--I barely tapped my skin and all this product came out:
Definitely a good thing, because I hate when products are difficult to apply.

 X Out Shine Control
$: No Retail Value (originally a 'free bonus' for buying the X-Out wash-in treatment, no longer available). Looks like they were clearing their inventories when they gave it to MyGlam, because there's a different 'free bonus' now.
Size: .75 oz (one size)
At A Glance: Proactiv is owned by Guthy-Renker, the king of infomercial and mall-kiosk companies. I'm guessing MyGlam struck a deal with them, because they've featured their products in the last bag (Wen, Sheer Cover).
Impression: I certainly can't use this product. Basically all it does is dry your skin out with alcohol, so especially for someone with dry skin, this is a no-no. There are a lot of complaints about skin irritation and burning when using this product.

Freeman Feeling Beautiful Mask in "Goji Berry"
$:1.99 maybe? Haven't seen them around,  but apparently there's some coupon at Walmart making these $.25 there. The full size is $3.99 at most drugstores.
Size: .5 oz (single-use packet). Full size is 6 oz.
At A Glance: A hydrating, soothing facial mask; drugstore product.
Impression: In general, masks don't do anything for my skin--if anything, they irritate it. I don't think this specific product would burn my skin, but I don't have any use for it.

NuMe "Gift Certificate"

$: No Retail Value, "$100 off" coupon code. I don't think they should use the word "gift certificate", because it has an expiration date and can only be used on certain products.
(use code MYGLAMAGRAM14 for 50% off total purchase at NuMe Online; shipping/tax is at least $15)
At A Glance: You've probably never heard of them before, but I'm sure you've walked by some of their salespeople peddling you at the mall. Yep, this is one of gimmicky mall-kiosk companies. Their sales strategy is to mark their prices like 400% above what should be their retail value, but offer "discounts" and "exclusive offers" ALL THE TIME; a quick google search shows an assortment of "$125 off, 40% off, 50% off" codes, along with Hautelook and Groupon "exclusives".
Impression: I'm disappointed MyGlam partnered with such a company, and offered a cheesy code like it has some sort of value. You're roped into thinking it's a good deal because you think "oh my gosh! exclusive offer, $100 off??" But in hindsight, are their products any better than companies like Hot Tools (cheaper even with the discount)? I would argue, no. Before the MyGlam bag shipped out, I couldn't find a single youtube reviewer who didn't receive it as a free promotion.

Dead Sea Premier Samples (x2)

$: No Retail Value. Full-size is $150 at (use code MYGLAM for 50% off)
Size: reaaaaaaaaally small. I really don't think it'll cover a single use. Full size is 2 oz.
At A Glance: "Re-energizes" skin by firming, nourishing, and removing dirt. I'll bet you've passed these mall-peddlers too! Yep, another gimmicky mall-kiosk brand.
Impression: Read more than a few complaints about skin irritation, so I will definitely not be using this. My skin is fine enough the way it is, I don't want to risk anything. There were a lot of positive reviews, but probably not worth the steep price tag.

Ghirardelli Chocolate (mini-size)

Impression: Nice addition, can't go wrong with some good chocolate! These are smaller than the ones you buy in 12-packs, I don't know where you can get them this size.

The MyGlam Bag

Impression: Not my style, but I actually really like it. I have a handful of makeup bags lying around, but nothing this slim and compact--it's perfect for me purse. Yay!

MyGlam vs. Birchbox

This is my December Birchbox, the one that finally led me to unsubscribe. The picture is very generous and zoomed in--the 'pore-fessionals' is like 2/3rds the size of the NYX shimmer:

5 items in total, only one of which is a "deluxe" sample": free hippy-grandma perfume vial, two tiny pieces of double-sided tape; a random drink sachet; a half-spilled vial of grease; and the mini pore-fessionals ($3-4).
Yet, this is how they advertise themslelves on their front page:

"Four to five hand-picked deluxe samples delivered to your door for $10 per month."
Birchbox may feature better brands, but you may not get your money's worth--at least now as they advertise.

Now compare that to MyGlam: 7 items altogether; even though I didn't touch the gift card or the skincare stuff, I still used the bag, ate the chocolate, and tried the NYX shimmer--more than I could say for most of my Birchboxes.
So in the end? I'm sticking with MyGlam for a few more months, depending on where or not they make improvements. I did, however, sign up for the Teen Vogue Birchbox.

What are your thoughts on these subscription services? Do you have a favorite, or any particularly good/bad experiences?

That NYX glitter stick does look fun! Sorry about the skin products though. I'd be willing to try the dead sea stuff, but if you have dry skin then maybe better to pass. And yes, you can never go wrong with chocolates! <3

I'm jealous you got a NYX roll-on in Chestnut! I got it in pink. It's pretty but chestnut is more my color! And I think the x-out stuff smells rank! It smells like hair dye in my opinion...

Stumbled upon this while trying to decide whether to unsubscribe from MyGlam. I think I'll wait around to see if they improve. Your blog is awesome. The pictures are so clear and pretty. Definitely going to be going through a few pages ;]

I saw you were giving away your NuMe certificate....I have heard of websites where you can trade in gift certificates/cards for cash(i know it sounds sketchy but some are legit!) Anyways, maybe next time you have a certificate you don't want, you could look into that. Just an idea, it would make a 10 dollar bag very valuable! Again, not sure it would even work, but worth a try!
